Diversity Summit Focuses on Leadership and Facilitating DEI Initiatives

Five Upper School students spent their Saturday attending the Philadelphia-area Diversity Summit on April 22.

"I was so happy to be a part of the conference. I had so much unexpected fun, and I definitely would look forward to attending more diversity conferences like this!" said Sophia Hu '24.

The event was held at the Friends Center in Center City Philadelphia and included students from independent schools throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Along with Sophia, EA attendees included Jenny Bui '23, Alex Chadwick '24, Marcus Childs '24, and Nardos Solomon '23.

"Students spent the day engaged in activities and learning circles where they learned about leadership and facilitating DEI initiatives at their respective schools," explained Executive Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Erica Snowden. "They learned more about facilitating skills and forming affinity groups."

"The conference was an eye opening experience because I was in an environment where everyone was so accepting and open to all different identities and perspectives," shared Sophia. "Everyone felt welcome, and all the activities we did were very encouraging to get me to open up and share with my fellow peers. I hope to take what I learned and implement it into the Social Justice Club at EA. I’m the head of the club and would like to gather more participation and facilitate better discussions to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in our school community."
