Pumpkinfinity: An Immersive Art Installation

"Who doesn't love a good black light, neon, and mirror project?" With an idea to create an immersive installation in the Crawford Campus Center Gallery, Lower Schoolers drew inspiration from the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's iconic All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins Infinity Room to bring their unique interpretation to life with Pumpkinfinity.

The captivating art installation features the works of Lower School Art Teacher Meghan Cangi-Mammele's 5th and 4th grade art students, including sculpted plaster pumpkins painted in vibrant colors that glow under black light and smaller yellow pumpkins that are hung from above, creating a striking contrast that adds depth and dimension to the overall experience.

To enhance the sense of infinity, the Gallery walls were covered with mirror-like paper, creating a mesmerizing reflection of the pumpkins and a truly endless effect. Dotted patterns, a signature element of Kusama's art, were also added to the pumpkins, further connecting the installation to her iconic style.

"Fifth graders engaged in a deep dive into Kusama's work, analyzing and discussing her techniques," Mrs. Cangi-Mammele said. "This sparked their own creative energy, and they took the lead in creating the Gallery's elements. From sculpting pumpkins to covering pedestals and designing the layout, the students were integral in every step of the process, and their work is truly impressive."

Mrs. Cangi-Mammele said seeing their creations come together in the Gallery space was a "magical experience" and that the Gallery not only showcases their artistic talent but also reflects their enthusiasm for all things. "It's wonderful to know that they had fun while learning, creating a memorable and enriching experience!" she exclaimed.

"The Crawford Campus Center Gallery’s mission is to celebrate, inspire, and enrich the arts at EA, and the latest immersive experience sure lives up to that!" said Visual Arts Chair David Sigel, Hon. "To walk into the Gallery in its early stages and watch the students planning, cutting, and hanging the reflective walls was truly a sight to see. Thank you to the talented Mrs. Cangi-Mammele and our 5th and 4th graders for putting together this timely transformation of the Gallery space!"

All are invited to step into our magical pumpkin world and experience the creativity and imagination of our young artists. Pumpkinfinity will be on display in the Gallery from Oct. 30 to Nov. 23.
