Four EA students have been recognized by the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) for their accomplishments in computer science.
Izzy Rozes '24 was named a 2024 Philadelphia Area Affiliate Winner, while Michelle Jiang '24, Ishani Khanna '25 and Isabel Ding '27 were selected as 2024 Philadelphia Area Affiliate Honorable Mention awardees of the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing program.
"Your outstanding leadership, exceptional academic history, and forward-thinking ability distinguish you as a remarkable young woman," the award letters stated. "As an award recipient, you join a supportive group of over 15,000 young women who, like you, have a passion for computing and technology."
To be considered for an Aspirations in Computing Award, students needed to submit an extensive application documenting their accomplishments and goals in STEM, which were then reviewed by college professors and industry professionals.
"I am immensely proud of the hard work and dedication shown by these girls, and we're grateful for the recognition of their achievements by the NCWIT program," said Computer Science Teacher Matthew Davis. "Recent studies indicate that while a significant number of girls express interest in computing careers, it's the social support from peers and mentors that often determines whether this interest translates into a career. Initiatives like the NCWIT program and our Girls in STEM Club have been instrumental in providing this support, enhancing the experiences of numerous students and helping them to realize their potential in STEM fields."
"I think opportunities to share our work at the national level is so important for girls since we are in a field with very low representation," Ishani said. "More inclusivity in the computer science field is critical, and it is because of awards like these that diversity is increasing, since girls have access to a community of girls who are also interested in STEM."
Currently, 110 female students are enrolled in a computer science class at EA.
Regional winners will be celebrated at an Affiliate Aspirations Award Ceremony at the Inn at Villanova on April 3.
