Edward H. Vick Jr. '62 Veterans Day Chapel Features Meghan Hubley '13
Middle and Upper School students gathered for a combined Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 6, for the annual Edward H. Vick Jr. '62 Veterans Day Chapel. Watch here.
Featured speaker Meghan Hubley '13 received a warm welcome as she returned to campus, along with alumni and teachers who have served in the military.
Lt. Hubley attended the United States Naval Academy, where she majored in Quantitative Economics and was a four-year varsity letter winner on the Navy Women’s Lacrosse team. At EA, she was a three-sport varsity athlete (soccer, basketball, and lacrosse) and served as a captain.
Lt. Hubley was introduced by Mr. Ed Vick. "Meghan is an exceptional woman," shared Mr. Vick. "She is indeed a remarkable graduate of both Episcopal and The Naval Academy."

Lt. Hubley began by saying she never imagined that one day she would be asked to speak at EA on Veterans Day Chapel. "I was focused on classes, sports, and friends, much like many of you are. But what I didn't realize then was that EA was preparing me for a journey that would take me to the U.S. Naval Academy, to the deck of planes of United States Navy ships, and into the reactor engineering plants of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers."
She explained she pursued the Naval Academy because of the structure, academic, and athletic rigour, along with the opportunity to serve the country. "For me, service started with chasing a dream in sports, and it evolved into something much greater."
Lt. Hubley admitted that, while at EA, Sportsmanship was not her favorite Stripe. But as she looks back, she reflected that "Sportsmanship doesn't mean you stop competing fiercely. It means you respect the game, your opponent, and yourself. It means channeling your grit in a way that lifts your team instead of hurting it."
She also shared how her EA education prepared her for life in the military and service.
"I see a straight line of preparation," remarked Lt. Hubley. "My hope for each of you is this: find your own way to serve. It might be the military. It might be in medicine, in teaching, in business, in art, or in your family. But whatever path you take, look for opportunities to give you more than you take, to lift others up, and to live with gratitude."
Upon graduation in 2017, Lt. Hubley was commissioned as a Nuclear-Trained Surface Warfare Officer.
She served aboard the USS Anchorage, an amphibious transport ship based in San Diego, California, from 2017 to 2019. From there, she completed intensive training at the Nuclear Power School in Charleston, South Carolina, and later served aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Norfolk, Virginia.
Lt. Hubley is currently stationed at the Naval Academy, where she is teaching nautical navigation.
