Flutist Ashley Kim Wins Luca del Negro Youth Soloist Competition

Ashley Kim '23 earned first place at the 2022 Luca del Negro Youth Soloist Competition.

She performed the Mozart Flute Concerto No. 2 in D. "I chose it because I love its broad singing sections and light, fluttery sequences," shared Ashley. "The piece gives so many opportunities to express different characters and is so much fun to play."

Ashley performed before a panel of judges on Jan. 18 at the competition venue in Broomall. The judges commented on her, "outstanding technique and excellent finger accuracy," and "excellent intonation."

"I love to perform, so I try to treat every competition as a new opportunity to do what I love," said Ashley. "Competitions are a great motivator because they require you to focus, work hard, and take risks. On the day of performance, I trust this process and focus on telling a story with my piece."

Ashley will perform as a soloist with the Rose Tree Pops Orchestra on Sunday, May 22.

"There are so many talented musicians in our area, so I was thrilled to find out I won the Luca Del Negro Youth Soloist Competition," said Ashley. "This will be my first time performing as a soloist with a full orchestra. I'm so excited!"
