Stephen Brooks, who entered EA in 6th grade, was involved in the Glee Club, Junto, Scholium, student government, and the Vestry. He also ran cross country and wrestled, eventually becoming co-captain of the wrestling team his senior year. In 2017, he, alongside his team, was inducted into the EA Athletic Hall of Fame.
After EA, Stephen attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1980 with a B.A. in Biology. He then went on to The University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1984, followed by a surgical residency at The Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham, AL, and a trauma fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. For nearly 34 years of his career, he has served as a general, vascular, and trauma surgeon. Since 1990, Stephen has been based at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass, where he serves as the vice chief of staff and head of surgical medical student education. He is also an assistant professor at UMass Chan Medical School, where he received the Community Physician Award in 2019.
When he is not helping shape the next generation of surgeons, Stephen lives the Stripes by dedicating his time to help people of war-torn Ukraine, specifically children, since the Russian invasion. He has been involved with Camp Good News, a summer camp on Cape Cod, Mass., founded by his grandfather in 1935, where he currently serves as vice president.
After years of having youth counselors come to the camp from Ukraine, Stephen was devastated when he learned about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the summer of 2023, Stephen made it possible for 22 at-risk Ukrainian children to come to the United States to "just be kids" for a few weeks at the same Cape Cod camp his grandfather started. He raised funds, purchased tickets, and secured visas, allowing the children to make the long trip to the United States. This summer, another group of kids will have the chance to attend the camp, thanks to the generosity of Stephen and many others.
