Wednesday, March 6 - Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday in Chapel, students and faculty took part in a special Ash Wednesday service. Ash Wednesday is a Christian holy day focused on prayer, fasting, and repentance. The holy day marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent, a 40-day period of penance in preparation for Easter. Dr. Topher Row spoke about the importance of Lent and recognizing sin in our world. He stressed the importance of choosing the "hard right" over the "easy wrong." He illustrated how Lent is a time to realize our own mortality, the world's sinful nature, and the saving grace of God. At the conclusion of Chapel, students and faculty who wished to receive ashes assembled at the altar and received ashes. The Chaplains also hosted additional services for the entire EA community throughout the day.

Tuesday, March 5 - Laying Down Your Life for Others

The Tuesday Drama Meets Religion (DMR) skit was based on Mark 15:18-20, 38-39, where soldiers mock Jesus, yet one later understands he was the son of God, but only after Jesus died for us. The play featured twin brothers (Matt Lange and Zach Divito) who could not be more different. Matt's character was a brilliant student, and Zach was a "cool kid" who did not like his brother's academic success. His mom (Isabella Brunetti) and sister (Caden Cooper) tried to bring some peace to Zach's endless bullying of Matt, but to no avail. After Matt asked for extra help from his math teacher (Ian Lee), Zack's friends (Ryan Sewell and Aaron Tang) and Zach push Matt around at recess and the school principal (Caroline Churchman) intervened. During an ensuing argument, where Zach displays his insecurities with Matt's success, Zach almost gets hit by a passing vehicle before Matt pushes him out of the way. Tragically, Matt is killed in the process. At the funeral, Zach realizes how much Matt had cared for him and regrets his treatment of his brother and strives to repair the breach between him and the rest of the family.
