Since 2014, JTerm's in-depth, interdisciplinary courses have provided countless moments of inspiration.
To celebrate the fifth year of this groundbreaking, two-week academic program, we will select five moments to feature each day. On the final day of JTerm many students presented their final projects. Here are the JTerm Daily Five from Friday, Jan. 12. View previous days here.
Building Inspections
Students showcased their designs and explained the thinking behind their hand-built prototypes in EA's Next Building? Designing a Sacred Space (Row, R. Maier). EA alum and architect Sam Olshin '78, Operations Manager Mark Notaro, and Len Haley, Hon. listened to all of the student presentations and provided their observations, feedback, and constructive criticism as students defended their designs.
DancEAthon Flash Mob
Planning is well underway for the second annual DancEAthon. Students shared the details and encouraged Middle School students to get involved during a presentation during Middle School Chapel- which included a surprise flash mob of dancing DancEAthon (Farrell, Edwards) students. The event is planned for Friday, March 2, from 1 - 8 p.m. Money raised from the event will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia spina bifida program.
Tasty Experiments
Lower School students in Ms. Na's 2nd grade class stopped by Kitchen Chemistry (Rheam, Kurz) for a lesson in mixing ingredients with tastes that don't usually go together (honey and soy sauce). JTerm students also explained how salt helps break down meat. With the help of the 2nd grade assistants, the duo of Gabe Furey '19 and Quinn Chambers '19 made a delicious honey chicken dish. "We loved it!" shared Nola Waldbuesser '28. "It had a fabulous after taste," declared Meghan Limaye '28.
Arts on the Move
Arts on the Move showcased the work of three JTerm classes. Takin' it to the Streets (Erwin, C. Lavallee) students performed songs they rehearsed and sang at elementary schools in Philadelphia throughout JTerm. Highlights included: Stand by Me, Michael Jackson's ABC, You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen, and You're The One That I Want from Grease. The concert ended with a jam session with student soloists on the bass guitar, keyboard, drums, and amplified violin. Using industrial materials, student artists in art rEvolution (Hutchinson, Sigel) installed an exhibit titled "Forested" in the Crawford Campus Center Gallery. The exhibit was inspired by a field trip to the Museum of Modern Art where students viewed works by Tomas Saraceno and Al Loving. One Act Plays (Clay, McCreary) took center stage as students performed original works that they wrote and directed. Story lines included a humorous skit titled Soccer Mom and a thriller about three teenagers who repeatedly prank call the police only to be confronted by a serial killer.
Homecoming
One of the best parts of JTerm is hearing from students who arrived home from trips abroad. Students who traveled on the international Remembering the World Wars (Kelly, Konopka), Haiti: Making the Stranger our Neighbor (Gavin, Lopez-Pesini), and Out of Many, One People - Service Trip to Jamaica (Wingfield, Yespelkis), were all home safely today. The domestic Arizona: The Mystery and Majesty of Arizona & the Sonoran Desert (Memmo, Murray) trip as well as the international Service Trip to South Africa will arrive tomorrow. The domestic Stay Woke: Recreating the Freedom Ride (Bertucci, Kerwin), class will give a special final presentation in Chapel on Jan. 22.
