Three Squash Players Receive Special Awards at National Competition

Seven Episcopal Academy students competed in the 2018 U.S. Squash Junior Championships held March 16 - March 18 at Harvard University.

Senior Eric Kim placed 7th/8th in the BU19 division. The EA team co-captain was also awarded the 2018 DeRoy Sportsmanship Award, which is given to one female and one male high school senior who display exemplary on and off court behavior while competing at a high level in squash.

"Growing up since U11's, both my parents and coaches have taught me that how you carry yourself on court is more important than the outcome of the match," Eric shared with U.S. Squash. "Regardless of whether you're winning or losing, you need to play with respect."

Eighth grader Shaam Gambhir came in second in the BU15 finals. The last match went to five games (11-8). Shaam was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award. For the first time this year, US Squash recognized a player in each age division who displayed model sportsmanship throughout this season.

"Playing at such a high level and at the same time being recognized for their gracious sportsmanship is a great compliment to our two EA squash players, Eric and Shaam," shared Director of Squash Demer Holleran. "Squash is often credited with revealing character because of its innate pressure through being an individual sport and literally competing 'in a fish bowl' and these two as well as so many of our EA squash players are showing real strength in how they conduct themselves."

Sixth grader Winston Tang competed in the BU13 division- finishing in the 7th/8th position.

Senior Elle Ruggiero finished in 4th place in the GU19. She came very close in the 3rd/4th play-off with a 11-8 fifth game loss.

Sophomore Caroline Burt competed in the GU17 division with a 13th-16th finish. Caroline was awarded the William T. Ketcham Jr. Award for Most Improved Player in GU17. The award recognizes players who have demonstrated complete dedication to the sport by significantly raising the level of their game. The boy and girl in each division who displayed the largest increase in ranking from March 22, 2017 to February 28, 2018 and also competed in the National Juniors received the award.

Freshman Kristen Weil finished in 26th place in GU17. Junior Lauren Weil finished 27th/28th in GU17.
