A Fan Favorite Returns for Scrooge Chapel

Scrooge Chapel is one of the most memorable Chapels of the year. Theatre and Dance Department Chair Dan Clay, Hon. develops, casts, and directs the adapted production of A Christmas Carol, with countless faculty and staff starring as the main characters.

Each year, the characters of Jacob Marley and the three ghosts are portrayed through current pop-culture icons. The casting for each year's production is one of the best-kept secrets across campus, which adds to the anticipation and joy surrounding this beloved tradition.

As this year's performance began, audiences both near and far (alumni and parents could watch via livestream on Instagram) were treated to a huge surprise - the return of John Powell '70, who retired as a math teacher in 2016, reprising his decade-long run playing Ebenezer Scrooge. The audience welcomed him back with a standing ovation.

Lynne Hay, Hon. narrated as Rev. Bert Zug '78, who has played Jacob Marley for many years, appeared as Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. The ghost of Christmas past was played by Steve Schuh and David Mercante (as Dwight and Jim from The Office). The ghost of Christmas present was played by Head of School T.J. Locke (as KFC's Col. Sanders), and the ghost of Christmas future was played by Gina Buggy, Hon. (as fashion designer Edna Mode from The Incredibles). Tiny Tim was played by Coach Todd Fairlie, dressed as an EA football player, and Bob Cratchit was played by Mark Luff, Hon. and Mrs. Cratchit was played by Allison Schultz, Hon.

Members of the Domino Club were the supporting cast. The faculty/staff a cappella group sang as the performance got underway and ended with Joy to the World.

Scrooge Chapel was performed on Wednesday, December 18 for the Upper and Middle School.
