PreK Students Welcome Visitors to Putumayo Museum

Prekindergarten students welcomed their parents and other visitors to their Putumayo museum on Friday, April 6.

Putumayo was originally a world music program that was established to introduce people to the music of the world's culture. PreK teachers expanded the idea to complete a cross-curricular country study.

Over four weeks, students "travelled" to different countries to learn about history, music, food, animals, and clothing with a focus on Australia, Greece, England, Bolivia, Egypt, China, and Costa Rica.

Students then worked individually and in groups on projects that were displayed in their colorful and creative museum.

"I liked how my mom and dad were so surprised when they saw my Pharaoh headdress," said George Wentz.

"We chose countries that our students and their families could connect to, which we were able to do after learning about our students' ethnicities and family origins during our last unit of study," explained the PreK teaching team.

"I liked creating the dragon in China because my family is from China," said Rylen Wyatt-Wang.

"The best part was stamping my mom's and my grandparents' passports," explained Annie Old.

Students also used their art and design skills to build cardboard airplanes to "fly" to exhibits throughout the museum.

"I liked zooming around to all the countries with my grandma in my airplane," shared Ellie McGarry.
