July 24: Weekly School Reopening Update

Dear Parents,

Thank you to everyone who was able to join our parent webinar last week. Here is a detailed recap for those who may have missed the session. We will continue to post recaps and other updates, including this email, on our Summer Resources page.

Beginning today, we plan to share a weekly update on the progress of our reopening planning. We will send these updates via email every Friday afternoon, which will include some schoolwide and division-specific updates. We will also plan additional webinar sessions for parents and students as we get closer to our September 1 start date.

All-School Updates

  • Scenario Planning: We are continuing to plan for multiple scenarios with the hope that we can return to in-person instruction. We will announce which scenario we will implement, along with specific details, sometime in August.
  • Dress Code: We may decide to relax some aspects of our dress code for health reasons. These changes would focus on reducing the types of clothing that are not laundered regularly, like ties, blazers, and sweaters. We will share a final decision on this next week, but we encourage parents to hold off on purchasing new uniforms until we announce that decision.
  • Classrooms: We have been working to rework layouts and to remove furniture, which will allow us to achieve 6 feet of distance between student desks in all classrooms.
  • Music Classes: We will be adjusting the way in which we conduct our music program to ensure a safe environment for students. For our older students, we will not hold music classes with more than five students at a time until, at the earliest, October. We continue to work through plans for our younger students and will send updates in the coming weeks.
  • Contact Tracing and Notification Policy: We have established contacts at the Chester County Department of Health. Since Delaware County does not have a Health Department, Delaware County falls under Chester County's Health Department. We will be working closely with our contacts there throughout the next few weeks to identify how we can enhance their contact tracing efforts, and we will publish the school's policy on how this process will work and how community notifications will be handled.

Upper School Updates

  • Item Retrieval/Textbook Returns: Mike Letts sent information this week on our US item retrieval schedule.
  • Dining Services: For families who are more comfortable packing a lunch this year, we will allow an opt-out and refund of our standard all-inclusive dining fee. Details on how to opt-out will be shared in next week's update.
  • Athletics: Heads of School and Athletic Directors from the Inter-Ac League met this week to continue to discuss potential options for fall athletics. A final decision will be made and shared with families by August 3. As a reminder, EA has decided to waive our athletic requirement for one year. If fall sports do move forward, we will provide families with a way to sign up for preferred sports before the start of the season.
  • Student Lounges: All student lounges will be relocated this year to larger spaces, which will allow us to accommodate 6 feet of distance between students. Students will be required to go to their designated space during all free blocks.

Middle School Updates

  • Item Retrieval: Imana Legette sent information this week on our MS item retrieval schedule.
  • Dining Services: For families who are more comfortable packing a lunch this year, we will allow an opt-out and refund of our standard all-inclusive dining fee. Details on how to opt-out will be shared in next week's update.

Lower School Updates

  • Item Retrieval: Leah Kimmet sent information this week on our LS item retrieval schedule.
  • Dining Services: We saw strong parent interest in a meal plan option for 1st-5th graders and are working to finalize this program. Next week, we will share details on how the plan will work and invite interested families to sign up.

Thank you all for your ongoing support and patience. We look forward to sharing additional updates next week.
