Hailey Deng '25 Selected for Young Musicians Debut Orchestra

Freshman clarinetist Hailey Deng has earned a seat with the Young Musicians Debut Orchestra (YMDO).

"YMDO is a beginning to intermediate level full symphonic orchestra that introduces student musicians to large orchestra playing," explained Upper School Band Director Ryan Dankanich, Hon.

"It was a pleasant surprise to be accepted into the orchestra," said Hailey. "I genuinely thought that my audition had gone terribly. I was and still am both excited and nervous about playing in YMDO; it's quite a commitment, and the music is difficult, but I enjoy it immensely!"

Student-musicians auditioned before a panel of judges. "The group of judges picked out the excerpts and parts of pieces for me to play," explained Hailey. "You don't expect to go in and play everything like a recital."

Hailey started playing the clarinet in 5th grade as part of the Lower School music program. "I'd tried out a bunch of instruments, but the clarinet was the one that was easiest for me to grasp even though I had actually wanted to learn the trumpet," said Hailey. "I like the flexibility of the clarinet. You can play a good range of high and low notes, and the clarinet fits into many genres of music."

The YMDO has scheduled concerts for Jan. 22, Feb. 27, and May 21.

"Through standard orchestral repertoire, students are challenged to hone their talents for listening, blending, balancing, and making music within the full symphony context," explains the YMDO website. "Principal players are also encouraged to develop leadership skills, and less-experienced players learn from their peers and Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's acclaimed professional faculty. YMDO prepares its members for participation in Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra — and, eventually, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra."

"Band has introduced me the joy of playing music with other people," shared Hailey. "I love the pieces we play, and it's exhilarating when everyone is swept up in the emotions, expressing themselves in song."
