'En Sus Telas' Opens Sept. 30

Tantos símbolos, cábalas, sabidurias Astrales y cálculos se urden en sus telas.

So many symbols, spells, sayings, stars and conjectures are wrapped in their cloth.

- Miguel Angel Astúrias, Guatemalan poet and novelist, 1974

The World Language and Art departments are proud to host a colorful textile exhibit in the Crawford Campus Center Gallery. Beautiful Guatemalan textiles on loan to The Episcopal Academy from the Friends of the Ixchel Museum will be on display from Sept. 30 – Nov. 1. A gallery reception will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 12-1 p.m.

This exhibit celebrates the artistry of the Guatemalan weaving tradition as well as the rich culture and creativity of the weavers themselves. En Sus Telas, in The Crawford Campus Center Gallery, features traditional ancient Maya cloth made with the backstrap loom as well as textiles for daily wear or tourist sale. Come see the art of the traditional Maya blouse, or huipil, as well as pieces that show the modernization of textile design in Guatemala.

En Sus Telas is curated by Shannon Davis. Shannon and her husband, Chase (aunt and uncle of Pepper Claytor '23 and Ash '33) and Carlos Nottebohm (parent of Nicholas Nottebohm '10) serve on the board of the Friends of the Ixchel Museum.

Friends of the Ixchel Museum (FOIM) is a U.S. charitable foundation established in 1984 that promotes interest in the Mayan textile tradition of Guatemala and the work of the Museo Ixchel. It aims to contribute to the understanding, preservation, and protection of this important cultural legacy.
