Building Healthy Multicultural Communities with Dr. Ali Michael

The Episcopal Academy will join The Haverford School and The Shipley School to co-present a three-part series focused on building and sustaining healthy multiracial communities at our schools, and exploring how to educate white children about race in order to contribute to a healthy multiracial community.

These virtual sessions will be facilitated by positive racial identity development expert Ali Michael, the co-author of the award-winning Independent Schools Magazine article "What White Children Need to Know about Race."

Dr. Michael, a white woman, will share stories from her life as a parent, researcher, and anti-racism educator. We hope families of all backgrounds will join and contribute to important discussions, like:

  • How does racial identity development shape our experiences, and how do messages in the media or at home interfere?
  • What tools and skills are needed to help navigate conversations about race and racism?

Sessions will be held via Zoom at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26, Nov. 6, and Nov. 16. Attendance at all three sessions is encouraged (but not required) as information from each session will build upon the last. Register here!
