The Episcopal Academy, The Shipley School, and The Haverford School are presenting Allies and Accomplices, a special DEI session for parents, guardians, and caregivers on Monday, April 19.
Session Overview:
We are excited to welcome the authors and speakers of the podcast Demystifying Diversity, Daralyse Lyons, AnnaMarie Jones, and Zack James to present a session on the importance of moving beyond allies to accomplices and how and why that increases our capacity for empathy and fosters our investment in each other. This instructive session will ask people to encounter their implicit biases, fears, and privileges. The session will be eye-opening for participants and utilize real-life examples to get people to become more personally invested in diversity, equity and inclusion. This event is co-sponsored by The Shipley School, The Haverford School, and Episcopal Academy.
About Daralyse:
Daralyse Lyons is a journalist, an actor, and an activist. She has written more than two dozen full-length books, a handful of short stories, and countless articles, performed in various plays and in improv comedy shows. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a summa cum laude graduate of NYU, with a double-major in English and Religious Studies and a minor in History. After writing an award-winning children's book (I'm Mixed!) about embracing her multiethnic heritage, Daralysefound her passion and her purpose educating others about the need to embrace all aspects of themselves. She then went on to create the Demystifying Diversity Podcast and to write the book Demystifying Diversity: Embracing Our Shared Humanity. She works tirelessly as a full-time DEI expert and inclusivity strategist.
About AnnaMarie:
Demystifying Diversity co-creator AnnaMarie Jones is a mom, wife, journalist, community advocate, and local TV independent producer. A member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), she is a graduate of Syracuse University, majoring in Speech Communication and minoring in Spanish. AnnaMarie is a board member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Wayne, PA where she helped found the Mainline Refugee Resettlement Organization that gave five refugees from the DRC a safe place to rebuild their lives. As a Biracial woman, AnnaMarie's passion to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in her community and beyond, stems from her heart's desire to honor her beloved father (the late Ernest James George) and create the kind of world he could only imagine.
About Zack:
Zack James is a proud Temple grad and community member, as well as a passionate advocate for equity in entrepreneurship. He has spent much of his career supporting minority small business owners to realize their professional goals. A dot-connector, problem solver, and marketing strategist, Zack is passionate about people-first business initiatives.
He is the co-founder of Minority Alumni Coalition at Temple's School of Sport, Tourism & Hospitality management, a founding member of Grandma's Hands, and a Board Member of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Temple University graduate is a 12-year veteran of the Sports & Entertainment industry including a 6 year career with the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets.
He has been a valuable member of the Demystifying Diversity Team since the project's inception and was on-boarded this past January as an equal partner in the development of all DDP initiatives!
