Stellar Play & School Records Top Spring Athletics Mid-Season Recap

With only a few weeks left in the spring athletic season, EA teams are tallying up the wins as the schedule moves into Inter-Ac play. Girls' golf and softball are undefeated.

Varsity baseball is currently 11-2 and undefeated in Inter-Ac matchups with wins against Germantown Academy (6-2), Malvern Prep (5-2), and Penn Charter (5-1). Strong pitching and defense has been the key to the team's success. Derek Boyd-Volz '23, Logan Correll '25, and Michael Cadden '24 have contributed four wins and two saves between them. On the offensive side, junior Alex Barrist and senior captain TJ Cadden have been leading the charge with timely hitting and both are batting well over .300. The team looks to continue its success as they head into the rest of Inter-Ac play.

As girls' golf marks the halfway point, the squad is 5-0 with wins against The Baldwin School (210-298), Academy of Notre Dame (215-260), Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (205-281), and two wins against rival The Agnes Irwin School on April 5 (200-236), and April 17 (215-258). "We broke the all-time EA match record by one stroke (200) against AIS," said Coach Jenna Longen. "I am so excited to finish out this season strong. The girls have been working so hard." Low scoring averages include Carter Yearley '25 (40), with a low match score of 37, Clarissa Leung '25 (40.25), low match score 36, Libby Flaisher '25 (40.5), low match score of 39, and Addie Chang '25 (41.75), with a low match score of 39. The team is teed up for success at the upcoming Inter-Ac Championship round on May 9.

Big wins over Radnor High School (8-7), and MIAA schools St. Paul's School/Baltimore (11-10), and Gilman School (11-10), helped fuel the momentum for boys' lacrosse. With an 8-5 record, the squad is in the thick of Inter-Ac play. Leading scorers include Lucas Slate '23 (24G, 11A), TJ Lamb '23 (23G, 10A), Eddie Jones '23 (14G 6A), Dylan Jaszcz (16G, 4A), and Nick Wolff (10G 6A). Middie John Malone '24 was selected Main Line Athlete of the Week. "It should be at battle with two league games each week for the next month," said Coach Chris Bates. "We are excited to compete for the league title!"

It is a season to highlight for girls' lacrosse. The team beat rival AIS in a 5-4 nail-biter on Tuesday, April 18. The squad also blew past Notre Dame (17-5), Penn Charter (13-5), and SCHA (10-6). The squad currently sits 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Inter-Ac. "It's a strong start to the Inter-Ac season, after a fun team bonding trip over spring break," shared Coach Josie Tomaino. "We are learning a lot this season and working hard together." Over spring break, the girls beat nationally ranked Stone Ridge School (MD) 12-4, and St. St Stephens St. Agnes (VA) 15-1. Alexis Ventresca '23 scored her 100th career goal. "The key to our success lies in our commitment to playing a team game all over the field," said Coach Tomaino.

Softball is powering through the season and remains undefeated (9-0). "Maddie Masiko '25 has thrown 103 strikeouts to date and was selected Main Line Athlete of the Week. The girls have also racked up 85 hits, nine of which were home runs," beamed Coach Kelly Edwards, Hon. "They have scored 79 runs to their opponents three!" Other impressive stats include 26 runs, 15 RBIs, and five of the team's home runs for freshman Sophia Santinelli. Sophia's slugging percentage is 1.3! "Sofia Foulds '26 and Hanna Mae Legaspi '26 have also had stellar batting and fielding stats," said Coach Edwards. "The girls are in great shape to be contenders for the Inter-Ac title."

Boys' track and field has two league meet wins over Malvern Prep and SCHA. The team also competed at the WC Rustin Invitational. Freshman Abaas Hunter has set records in the 100m dash (10.73) and the 200m (21.78). "Although we score league meets, the league champion is determined at our end-of-year Inter-Ac meet," explained Coach Zach Richards, Hon. The team will compete in the upcoming Penn Relays, running in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. "We also have AJ Koukou '24 competing in the Shot Put, and we have a relay team competing in the DMR Championship of America."  The team is also looking forward to competing at the Delco, Inter-Ac, and PAISAA Championship meets.

Girls' track and field ran away with a win (75-33) against SCHA at their season opener in March. The girls also ran past Notre Dame (71-43), and Baldwin (74.5-38.5) in mid-April. The team had success at the Delco Relays as Taylor Hammond '24 and Bella Notaro '24 won bronze in the Javelin Relay-a first for EA in the event. At The Coatesville Invitational, Avery Elliott '24 set school records in the Outdoor Long Jump (18-00.75/1st place) and 100m Hurdles (15.05/2nd place). She has also reset the High Jump record (5-4) at Notre Dame. Maya Bright '25 scored at Coatesville in the Long Jump (17-9/2nd place) and the 100m (12.46/4th place). The team travels next to the Kellerman (Great Valley HS) and Blue Jay (Elizabethtown College) Invitationals and then to The Penn Relays to close April.

"The boys' tennis team has shown tremendous grit and perseverance throughout the start of the spring season," said Coach Whit Powell, Hon. "The season got off to a choppy start, due to the weather, but we’ve enjoyed a recent run of good weather and competitive matches." The team notched wins against SCHA (4-3), Penn Charter (5-2), and swept Malvern Prep (7-0). The squad, which includes only two seniors, is 5-4. "Our opponents and their parents have commented on how the EA team plays and competes the 'right way,' " reflected Coach Powell.

"Boys' and girls' rowing has made an excellent start to the season with a very young team. We have posted 1st place wins in nearly every one of our boats," said Coach Molly Konopka, Hon. "Our Girls’ JV 4+ is ranked as the top boat from PA going into the 5th Manny Flick race which is the seeding race for the City Championship."  The Boys’ Lightweight 4+ is similarly ranked. The Boys’ JV 4+ posted a solid win in the 3rd Manny Flick, along with Girls’ Varsity 4x. "Our Boys’ Varsity 4+, with all junior and sophomore student-athletes, won the 3rd Manny Flick and posted a solid 4th place in the fastest heat of this extremely competitive field," said Coach Konopka. The Boys’ Novice 2x placed 1st in the 3rd Manny Flick and 2nd in the 4th Manny Flick.
