Little Minds, Big Emotions: Deciphering Behavior Through Brain Science

Monday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the EA Turner Lower School Library

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Melissa Neubauer Anderson, Psy.D is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked with young children and adolescents, as well as their families, in both schools and private practice for the past 25 years.

She served as a School Psychologist at The Hill Top Preparatory School in Rosemont and The Agnes Irwin School in Villanova, and currently the consulting school psychologist at Central Nursery School, where she works with teachers to develop social and emotional curriculum, run ongoing parenting groups, and work individually with children needing additional support. She has been a consultant for Philadelphia Futures and Project Home to partner in designing and implementing trauma-informed services with the client at the center of the decision-making. In addition, she helped start and co-lead programs at Gateway Horseworks serving women incarcerated as well as on probation and parole, people with addictions, victims of human trafficking, and adolescent girls on probation.

Beyond these individual organizations, she has led workshops and training for teachers, directors, and their families, and presented on such topics as intergenerational trauma and parenting, neurobiological effects of trauma, moral and conscience development in children and adolescents, eating disorders, leadership in girls, and balancing technology and family. She loves working with parents and children to manage developmental challenges as well as the impact of trauma.

In addition, she is raising four children (ages 14-23) and is continually humbled and filled with joy as they help her understand parenting and group dynamics first-hand.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Florence Sturm

Florence has over 27 years of experience helping countless parents reclaim the joy of parenting while learning to be calm, confident and unconditionally loving. In 2012, Florence started ParentEd., an organization which offers information, guidance and support for parents of children of all ages. Her experience as a certified parent educator as well as the mother of five children has taught her that parenting can be overwhelming and often needs support in the form of resources and education. Parent education programs are vital to any community and Florence is dedicated to the development of these programs.

About our Speakers:

Lisa Corcoran

Nine children, six siblings, and 97 cousins may have had something to do with Lisa's desire to study parenting. Lisa took a parenting class based on Adlerian (Alfred Adler) theories that proved to be the most humbling experience of her life. She learned that to raise loving, responsible, confident and happy children she would need to start with herself. So Lisa started taking more classes. She started applying the tools and little by little her home became a calmer place to be and her job as a mother didn't really feel like a job at all. Lisa founded The Parenting Playbook to bring these life-changing tools to more families.
