Episcopal Launches One-to-One Computer Program

Episcopal Academy launched a one-to-one computing program in the fifth grade on September 5.
Seventy-two fifth graders each received identical MacBook Airs, purchased and configured by the school and loaded with our software. The students explored the new machines during this orientation—connecting to network resources, locating online learning tools, and hearing about the many ways the laptops will be used this year.
“The laptop program is a very natural extension of our current approach to technology and learning,” says Cathy Hall, Academic Dean. “We use these tools as resources in the classroom to facilitate collaboration, innovative teaching, and to give students access to a tremendous wealth of learning opportunities.”
In preparation for this moment, EA sent 12 teachers to the Lausanne Laptop Institute in Memphis, Tennessee over the summer to learn how to adapt their teaching to a one-to-one environment. The fifth-grade team also met over the summer to review the curriculum and to identify new ways to leverage the technology.
“This is the culmination of a year of deliberation, planning, and infrastructure improvement,” says Alex Pearson, EA’s Director of Technology. “We look forward to seeing this program in action as our students and teachers make great use of these new tools.”
