Opening Chapel: "Hold Fast to What is Good"

Middle and Upper School students gathered in Chapel on Wednesday, September 7 to mark the first day of the school year.

New Head Chaplain Tim Gavin presided over Chapel, and Dr. T.J. Locke, Greville Haslam Head of School,

welcomed students, faculty, and staff and shared his opening day thoughts.

This year's Chapel theme, Hold Fast to What is Good, resonates with Dr. Locke as he watches EA students and his own children grow and begin another school year. "The 'hold fast' is the interesting part to me," explained Dr. Locke. "There is something tenacious about the wording, something intense. It is not 'hold onto' what is good. 'Hold fast' connotes for me a sense of perseverance."

Dr. Locke recounted speed skater Dan Jansen's quest for an Olympic medal. After repeated falls and the tragic loss of his sister, Jansen finally achieved his life-goal during the 1994 Winter Olympics. In his last event in the Winter Games, Jansen slipped slightly but managed to win gold and set a world record in the 1000 meter sprint. "Dan became an Olympic hero, not just for his excellence but also for his perseverance," observed Dr. Locke.

Perseverance builds character. Dr. Locke asked students to think about this important trait. He explained, "...each time you play, and each time you cheer, you have the opportunity to outdo the opponents in terms of honor." He continued, "What you do with those opportunities, especially in small ways, will help form your character. It will help shape your legacy."

Dr. Locke challenged students to "work very hard, re-write some of your scripts, and you will most certainly have to hold fast to what is good."

In closing, he shared, "Have a great year, and thank you for making EA a very special place."
