Yellow "caution" signs and red "danger" tape are prominently on display in The Roger Annenberg Memorial Library. The catchy signs are not designed to be a deterrent but are strategically placed to draw attention to Banned Book Week.
Middle and Upper School Librarian Jenn Phiambolis explains, "It is important for kids to understand the destructive nature of censorship. Having unrestricted access to books and information is a freedom that not everyone is fortunate enough to have."
Several books on the banned list are on display as visitors enter the library. Many are covered with signs including pictures of students and teachers with their faces covered by a cut-out mask reading "readstricted."
The American Library Association reports 11,300 books have been banned or challenged in the United States since 1982.
Banned Book Week was started 23 years ago in response to the growing number of books banned by schools, libraries, and bookstores.
