I t’s been said often, that what makes a school great is not the buildings, but the quality of the teaching and the desire of the students to learn. For years, Episcopal Academy students have achieved incredible results in less than optimal conditions, in the classroom, on stage, in the art studio, and on the athletic fields. As alumni, we are naturally drawn to the site of the performance we remember, or the spot where our favorite teacher inspired us with daily wisdom. How do we deal with the emotional impact of a brand new campus, regardless of whether we endorse the move intellectually? The good news is that all the things we truly love about Episcopal are going to Newtown Square: all of the traditions of academic, athletic, and artistic excellence, molded around a strong spiritual center will be on the new campus. That is not to say that some new traditions won’t be born that we all can rally around in the future. But for all of us who spent anywhere from two to fourteen years in Merion, we can be confident that the essence of The Episcopal Academy will not only be present in Newtown Square, it will flourish, just as it did when we moved from center city to City Line Avenue. Just like when a family moves from a long-time residence, the address may change, but the family is still the same.

To ensure that in this transition our memories of student life in Merion are not lost, we will bring with us a veritable trove of artifacts, pictures, athletic shields and archives which will remind us of the campus we attended and those that preceded it. There will be a number of very special places around the new school which will be designated towards preserving Episcopal’s past, lest we forget our roots. The connection to the city of Philadelphia will not be lost, either in drawing potential students or in providing a backdrop for the educational and cultural development of our students. In many respects, we as alumni have a unique opportunity to infuse the Newtown Square Campus with our passion for Episcopal, and do so with a veritable blank canvas. It doesn’t get any more moving than that!

Please take some time to investigate this new section of the website and check out the incredible images that are available of our future home!
