Translating Sappho

Chris Preddle

These verses appeared in CA News, the newsletter of The Classical Association (Great Britain). They scan as lesser Sapphics:

Stanzas scanned like this and the next are Sapphic.
Heavy stresses land at the start of lines and
Light ones end them. Part of a word can over-
Flow to the last line.

Writing English verse in a metre made for
Greek confounds the rhythm and makes it stop and
Start abruptly. Artifice takes aways the
Feel of the language.
