A map is a simplified drawing of a place. Physical features, such as mountains, lakes, roads, and cities may be represented by shapes, signs and symbols, and drawn according to a scale of measurement. An atlas is a collection of maps usually shown with additional information describing the place. Atlases may be a compilation of maps that represent a specific time and place in our current world or a certain time and place in history. LIBRARY LOCATION: Atlases are generally located in the reference section of libraries and their call numbers are based on the information they cover. For example, historical atlases will be shelved in the 900's. Note, some atlases may be shelved in a special location in the library because they can be too large to place on average-sized book shelves. Search the online catalog subject, note and title fields to find atlases.
