A dictionary provides the meaning of words! An abridged dictionary provides selected words and an unabridged dictionary includes as many words and meanings as possible, and therefore may be a VERY BIG dictionary. Dictionaries arrange words in alphabetical order. They also tend to provide lots of other useful information, such as word histories, maps, synonyms (words that mean the same) and antonyms (words that mean the opposite). Student dictionaries sometimes include illustrations that help define words. LIBRARY LOCATION: Browse reference 400's for dictionaries and other books related to the use of language, such as writing systems and grammar.
