“Where I’m from”
By Otisia W.
I am from long days and sleepless nights,
From tired eyes that cried to the moon.
I’ am from late nights and early mornings.
I am from projects and old buildings,
From messed up parks and old swing sets
I’ am from school fights to playground fights.
I am from family meeting and family gatherings,
From family fights and no longer speaking.
I’ am from family meals.
I am from fried chicken, mashed potatoes and greens,
From cook outs and eat in.
I’ am from the best.
I am from “sit downs” and shut ups”
From “what did I say” and “Hard heads makes soft behinds”.
I’ am from “The get past me” to the “stay in the house”.
I am from old pictures and stories,
From family movies to short films.
I’ am from a family of love.
I am from grandmas, who could cure anything,
From the best hugs and kisses she could give.
I’ am from cookies baked with the best love in the world.
I am from a world that lies, steal, and cheat,
From the land of broken hearts and dreams.
I am from the land of not going to make it.
I am from the people,
Who pushed for me to have the best,
From the “you have to make its” and “the way to goes”.
I am from the land of “you did it”.
