“Where I’m From”
By Denise T.
I’m from mansion,
Where all they want is to win
I’m from a home where I am loved
I’m from a land where people get killed
From a place where all I can do is hide
I’m from a mother wound where I once lived
I’m from fried chicken and green peas
From a home cooked meal
I’m from a family that allows boyfriends
I’m from a place where only I can be me
From a story, play and even pictures
I’m from north Philly where I live and was raised
I’m from new picture and mystery story
From a place where I feel alone a some point
I’m from a home where there are more boys
I’m from grandmas, who had the upper hand
From mamas who listen to husbands
I’m from left over and hand me downs
I’m from a land where no one understands me
From a place where I’m some what alone
I’m from a land where the grass is no longer green
