2012 Season Recap
With such a successful season last year and so many seniors graduating, the 2012 Rowing team had a lot to live up to, but this year’s squad succeeded beyond expectations.
The girls repeated as InterAc champions, winning the Eights race by 17 seconds and the Quad race by four seconds despite an early boat stopping crab. The Girls Lightweight Four won the fourth and fifth Manny Flick races, leading to a first seed in the City Championships, where they earned a fourth place finish, a bid to the Scholastic Nationals Regatta, and finalist at the Stotesbury Regatta. The Girls Varsity Double came in second at the Fifth Manny Flick, and, despite buoy issues at the City Cham- pionships, qualified for the Scholastic Nationals and was a Stotesbury semi-finalist. The Girls JV Four earned silver at the City Championships, a berth at Scholastic Nationals, and was a finalist at the Stotesbury Regatta. And the Girls Quad earned silver at both the City Championships and the Stotes- bury Regatta, earning bids to the Scholastic Nationals and the US Rowing Youth Nationals in Oak Ridge, TN. Girls Junior Varsity Four: City Championships Silver Medal
On the boys’ side, the Boys Lightweight Four was a finalist at the City Championships and the Stotes- bury Regatta, earning a bid to the Scholastic Nationals. The Boys Heavyweight Four won the City Championships (for the first time in four years, when Stroke Nick Mead’s brother, Loren, EA ’08, won it) and bronze at the Stotesbury Regatta, missing out on second by just a hundredth of a second. The Boys Four also earned a bid to the Scholastic Nationals and the Youth Nationals.
In all six crews (26 rowers and coxswains) earned bids to the Scholastic Nationals, with two boats go- ing on after graduation to row with the fastest crews in the country at the US Rowing Youth Nationals. Captains Michael Pettit, Lyssa Freese, and Jordan Marinchak kept the squad together through many dark mornings, long workouts, and tight racing. The most valuable player award should really go to our incredible parents who supply food and drinks during day and weekend-long regattas, setup tents, drive motor boat launches, shuttle rowers and spectators around, and get up at crazy hours to accom- plish all of the above, all while staying positive. Thank you for a great season.
